Reading Counts

“Reading Counts Rising Stars” is the program we are sponsoring this year in the library.  We have over 2800 books at a variety of grade levels that have quizzes on the computer, which can be taken after the student reads the book.  The computer keeps track of the scores on the quizzes and the number of words in the books.  Students are encouraged to check out a Reading Counts book every week.  Every student will have a star with their picture on it. Stars will fly on the library window, and rise higher each month based on the accumulative number of words read.   Student goals for the 1st trimester are:

                1st graders – will begin 2nd trimester
                2nd graders – 1200 words
                3rd graders – 10,000 words
                4th graders – 40, 000 words
                5th graders – 50,000 words
                6th graders – 60,000 words

Students who achieve these goals will be awarded a prize during library class at the end of the trimester.  This year our school goal is 40 million words per trimester for a total of 120 million for the year.  Parents can help their children succeed by encouraging them to choose Reading Counts books, or even better, by reading aloud with their students.  There is currently a Reading Counts list in the library.  Feel free to stop by any time to review the list and view your student’s progress on our window.  Please contact us if you have any questions.
